Burglars can have a significant impact on businesses, both financially and psychologically. Burglars can cause loss of property, damage, decreased productivity, and loss of trust from both employees and customers.
We believe that education for business owners is first and foremost when it comes to preventing burglary and theft. When business owners understand data, they can make calculated decisions and be proactive.
Every year, there are around 2.5 million burglaries in the US. About 33% of these are non-residential, which means that about 825,000 burglaries every year affect companies and businesses.
Where: The FBI reports that 90% of all intrusions are through doors. Most of those are using forcible entry too. By having a security system present and visible, businesses can help deter burglars from trying to enter their business.
When: According to the FBI, non-residences (offices, stores, etc) are broken into more at night than during the day. This is reversed from the residential burglary statistics, as those occur more during the daytime while people are away. Businesses are also more susceptible during holidays and weekends, or any days the business might be closed.
Who: Businesses most vulnerable include convenience stores, banks, firearm stores, grocery stores, jewelry stores, and new small businesses, as these often don't have security systems in place.
How: 90% of burglaries involve forcible entry. Even without loss of property (if the intruder is stopped, for example), the building will have damage from entry. Once a burglar has entered, more harm can be done including property damage and loss, as well as assault if someone is present. It is reported that around 60% of assault cases happen during a burglary.
Prevention: Burglars prefer easy targets and smooth execution. They look for businesses that might not have security measures present, or is not utilizing their system to the fullest. Preventing this crime starts with having a quality security system.
